90 Percent of People Don't know How to use CTRL+F

According to a study from Daniel Russel at Google only 10% of American Internet users know what CTRL+F does. Similar results have been obtained by another independent study.

It’s pretty amazing that so many people don’t know what such a useful key shortcut does, right? If you belong to this 90% you’ll be happy to learn that...

If you press the CTRL and the F (Command + F in Mac) keys at the same time you can search for a word in any webpage you visit.

If you are like me, CTRL+F is something you just can’t live without. Then, you might be interested in the following information.

Beyond CTRL+F

Being such a useful function we may ask ourselves, is there something out there which is better than CTRL+F?

The answer is yes!

If you use Firefox you can install and use SearchWP, a browser extension which is better than regular CTRL+F because it lets you search for multiple words, not just one.

And even better than that, if you use Chrome, Safari or Firefox you can install and use browseye, a relatively new browser extension which is better than regular CTRL+F for the following reasons:
  • you can search for multiple words on a web page and use quotes to search for phrases
  • it suggests you words from the web page as you type your search query. No suggestions means you already know there are no matches even before pressing ENTER
  • paragraphs not containing matches can be lowlighted or hidden from your view to let you focus on the matches
  • browseye highlights all the links that lead to pages containing matches for your search, so you know if it's worth exploring a link before clicking on it
Browseye's suggest box lists words from the web page as you type your search query

Happy searching!
